This site is my attempt to bring back to life an amateur magazine (The Whitwar) from the early twentieth century that was created by 12 year old Gladys Warren to raise funds for the "Little Folks Ward" at the North-Eastern Hospital for Children.

I became the unexpected custodian of what I believe to be the only surviving copy (Spring 1904) of this magazine, after purchasing it when it came up for auction around 2015.

I bid on it because I was interested in the clippings and cards that are glued inside, but I quickly realised what an important document this was and have since felt a responsibility to share its story. I am extremely grateful for my lucky find which has fueled my project of research, preservation and tribute.

I recognise that the problem of children living in poverty remains as urgent today as it was in 1903, and in that spirit I have chosen to continue Gladys Warren’s generous endeavour under The Whitwar name.

My copy of the Spring 1904 magazine has been transcribed and is available on this site by clicking one of the images above. As of March 2026, I have moved on to the research phase of the project which involves trying to finding out more about the North Eastern Hospital whilst transcribing contemporary articles and documents to add to our understanding of the aims of the magazine. The next large undertaking will be the preparation of a new issue, for which article contributions will be sought in the coming weeks. Then from there, I'll be building my following whilst doing more research and writing/editing future editions. These are exciting times indeed!

The revived edition will adopt a period tone while remaining accessible and relevant to a modern audience of all ages. It won't necessarily be aimed at children but will be suitable. I am incredibly excited to see how far we can take this project; there are some big plans already in the pipeline.

Please read my project Charter → to see if it is something you would like to be a part of.
